Just heard that Yasmin Ahmad passed away. Last saw her at TedxKL where she talked about how charisma is the sine qua non of successful actors. Her examples ranged from Sharukh Khan to Sharifah. She was articulate and more importantly very honest, which is a rare quality to find.
When I first came to Malaysia I saw her Petronas Ads and they portrayed the realities of Malaysia so beautifully. It reminded me of the ‘Mile Sur Mera Tumhara‘ which used to air on Doordarshan in India, but with a uniquely Malaysia perspective. Heart-tugging but not falling into saccharine sentimentality territory. She is a great loss for Malaysian Film Industry and will be a hard act to follow.
